The first round of the Gogsiprocal tour took place yesterday at Purdis Heath, what a lovely track that is!
As I left Cambridge it was pouring, but eased by Stowmarket and stopped by Ipswich. As I drove from the clubhouse it stated again. Just maybe the Gods are on my side.
Happily I was joined by the 3 Irish musketeers, in Graham Dempsey, Peter Baird and Kieron Lees. To be prepared we arrived at 10. Graham taking the Special option.

At this point he was a happy musketeer but when he discovered Kieron had booked the black tees, we saw a little of the Grumpy Graham Musketeer!
We played a 4BBB. The two Peters or two Lefties verses the “Why are we going off the black tees.” Graham and the “I could reach this.” Kieron

So off we went to the short 330 yd par 4 first. All drives on the fairway. Kieron taking an iron so he didn’t go through the Green. But it was first blood to the lefties as I hit my approach to 3 inches and birdied the first to go one up.
Through the first 4 holes the lefties looked in complete control. 3 up after four and a black cloud descending over Graham as he looked at each tee with disdain.
But as we passed the lake, something about the ducks clicked a switch in my head, watching the fisherman brought hooks to mind and suddenly my driver was taking me into the heather, with a series of duck hooks. I learnt once you go to Heather she will not let you go and over the next six holes I saw a lot of her. Graham’s black cloud had started to lift and the swashbuckling Kieron was finding his touch. Things were going swiftly downhill for the Lefties. My partner was playing ok but he was becoming increasingly distracted by all the consoling he was having to impart.
The game was quickly going away from us, and even with a little comeback towards the end, we were informed by our now Bonny scorer Graham, that we had already lost 4&3 two holes ago.
What a start for my tour! Birdie, par, parr and what a course, missing the rain, playing an awesome four holes and moving on in the knowledge that, for my golf at least, things can only get better.
